Irvine, California
Irvine is a city that was created out of whole cloth: the master
community of all master communities, intelligently planned, well
run and the ultimate modern suburb.
Home to the University of California, Irvine, the city takes
its education seriously. Academic rankings are in the 80s and 90s.
In 1994, Money magazine ranked Irvine as
number one in safety, among cities with a population greater than
100,000. Police are assigned to the middle and high schools and, in
a low-key way, work with the kids.
Irvine is close to freeways and the John Wayne Airport. Unlike
many master planned communities, Irvine is not solely residential.
The Plan called for creating a rounded, dynamic community with an
intellectual and commercial foundation.
The town encourages business and has landed research
facilities, office complexes and light industry located in
business parks. There are also many shops and stores.
There are restaurants, nightclubs, book stores, churches,
libraries, parks, trails, movie complex, IMAX theatre, adult
education, swimming pools, senior centers and a farmers' market.
And there's more.
The commute isn't bad from Irvine, but the whole of southern
Orange County is getting congested. Metrolink, the train, has a
station in Irvine. It runs from Oceanside to Los Angeles.
If you're looking for old and quaint, Irvine is not the place
for you.
